It is often said that many of the greatest inventions are the ones that come from the heart. This couldn’t be truer of our story.
The SuperSpica wheelchair evolved when our two year old son, Jack, was diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) and was placed in a Spica cast. Like so many parents before us who had faced this, we desperately researched our options for a solution to Jack’s impending immobility. After several online searches and speaking to hospital doctors, the best solutions available were using a heavy, bulky wheelchair or a toy wagon to pull Jack around.
As parents, our biggest concern was having Jack’s autonomy hindered along with his mobility. Jack’s developing independence and ability to explore his surroundings was highly valuable to us and we didn’t want him to miss a thing in this exciting time in his life! We were also concerned with maintaining the freedom and flexibility of our family to continue with our daily activities such as going to the grocery store, a walk around the neighborhood, or sending Jack to daycare.
Brainstorming for solutions, we developed a rough prototype for the SuperSpica wheelchair. Jack’s first Wheelchair was made in the garage out of hockey sticks and trailer wheels. After several modifications, the SuperSpica has evolved into a safe, durable, and lightweight portable device for small children to operate independently.
Our hope is for other parents, and their children, to utilize the SuperSpica wheelchair to overcome many of the obstacles faced when having a small child lose mobility. We found it to be a lifesaver!
